Motor Underwriting Manager - Malta

Role Summary:

To oversee and support the Motor Underwriting function, ensuring the continued profitable and sustainable development of the Motor portfolio.

To provide technical guidance and referral support to the Motor Underwriting team, ensuring underwriting decisions are aligned with company guidelines and objectives.

To work closely with the Senior Management and other stakeholders in supporting business development initiatives and strengthening relationships with intermediaries and business partners.

To contribute towards the achievement of the company’s strategic and financial objectives through effective underwriting oversight, portfolio monitoring, reporting and continuous improvement initiatives.

To act as a key point of contact for brokers, intermediaries, business partners and internal stakeholders on Motor underwriting matters.

To support, mentor and develop members of the Motor Underwriting team through ongoing guidance, coaching and people management initiatives.
Role Responsibilities:

Oversee and support the day-to-day operations of the Motor Underwriting function, providing technical guidance and acting as the main referral point for complex or non-standard underwriting risks whilst ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines, authority limits, pricing strategy and risk appetite.

Monitor the overall performance, profitability and sustainability of the Motor portfolio through regular portfolio reviews, analysis and reporting, taking corrective action where necessary to support business objectives and underwriting discipline.

Prepare underwriting, portfolio and performance reports for senior management and actively contribute to Underwriting and Claims Committee meetings through the presentation of relevant analysis, trends, concerns and proposed actions.

Collaborate with the Data Solutions and IT teams to support the development and enhancement of underwriting systems, tools, reporting capabilities, automation initiatives and operational processes aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery.

Identify and support opportunities for continuous improvement across workflows, controls, systems, procedures and operational processes within the Motor Underwriting function.

Ensure compliance with internal policies, governance standards, regulatory requirements and delegated underwriting authorities.

Lead, support and develop members of the Motor Underwriting team through regular communication, coaching, one-to-one meetings, performance management and effective workload allocation, whilst fostering a positive and collaborative team environment.

Keep abreast of market developments, competitor activity, regulatory changes and emerging trends affecting the Motor insurance sector.

Support strategic projects and other business initiatives as may be required by Senior Management.

Achievement of Motor portfolio profitability, growth and retention targets.

Support the delivery of sustainable and profitable business growth in line with company strategy and risk appetite.

Development and maintenance of strong intermediary, broker and partner relationships.

Timely preparation and presentation of accurate underwriting and portfolio management information.

Active contribution towards the enhancement and development of underwriting systems, reporting tools, operational processes and data-driven decision-making capabilities.

Effective people management, staff engagement and development within the Motor Underwriting team.

Ensuring appropriate performance management, coaching and succession planning practices are maintained across the department.

Ensuring compliance with underwriting governance, authority structures and regulatory requirements.

Strong technical understanding of Motor underwriting principles, portfolio management and risk assessment.

Ability to lead, mentor and develop underwriting teams whilst maintaining high technical and service standards.

Strong commercial awareness with the ability to balance growth objectives with underwriting profitability.

Ability to build credibility and maintain effective relationships with brokers, intermediaries, business partners and internal stakeholders.

Strong analytical and reporting capabilities, with the ability to identify trends and implement corrective actions.

Skills, Attributes:
-
Minimum 15 years’ experience in Motor Insurance.
-
ACII qualification preferred, or actively working toward achieving it within an agreed timeframe.

Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
-
Minimum 3 years’ experience in a team supervisory role, preferably within the Motor UW department.

Fluent in Maltese and English.
